 CAU UK Inter-Counties (Bedford, 30/31 May 2010)

A gold and silver double for Karrie Blake and Jenny Beckingham in the 800 metres, a gold medal for Louise Perrio in the 5000 metres and silvers for Isobel Pooley in the High Jump and Freya Jones in the Javelin were highlights in the women's team achievements as they finished sixth.

The men's team had some late drop outs due to injury. But at least this enabled us to give some young talent a blooding. Simon Phelan who jumped 2.09 last week and Matt Watson who jumped a PB of 2.01 last week both found the windy conditions too much for them, and only managed 1.95. Zane Duquemin threw 15.53 in the shot. Performance of the day was Andy Blow who finished third in the 400 hurdles; Andy is slowly running into form and should go well this year. Kieran Showler-Davis had to withdraw from the 200 metres semi-final after running second in 21.4 in his heat.

South of England Under 20 Men and Women (Watford, 30 August 2009)

Hampshire's Under 20 Men finished in sixth place and the Women in thirteenth place, combining to finish eighth overall out of seventeen counties attending.

City of Portsmouth's Richard Shuttleworth scored the most points for the men's team, finishing first in the Shot and second in the Javelin. Kieran Showler-Davis, one of a large contingent of Basingstoke athletes, took the honours in the men's 100 metres and Ryan Saunders (Bournemouth) took second place in the 1500 metres.

The women's team scored in several events, the leading pointscorer being Amber Perry in the Javelin.

South of England Under 15 Boys and Girls (Watford, 30 August 2009)

The boys' fifth place and the girls' eighth gave a combined seventh place out of seventeen counties competing.

The only boy to finish in the top three was Nicholas Percy - second place in the Hammer - but several fourths, fifths and sixths contributed to the boys' team's strong placing.

Shadine Duquemin led the way in the girls' team, winning the Shot, while Poppy Barker finished third in the Javelin. The commitment of several Jersey athletes in the boys' and girls' teams, as well as a few more "overseas" competitors from the Isle of Wight, was also highly commendable.

8-Counties Senior Men and Women (Chelmsford, 9 August 2009)

Hampshire's men's and women's teams finished sixth and seventh respectively in the 8-Counties match which was this year hosted by Essex County AA at Chelmsford.

Holly Croxford led the way in the women's match with a sprint double, and there were top-three finishes from Ceri Mitchell (1500 metres), Hazel Le Cornu (400m Hurdles), Kim Murray (Long Jump) and the 4x400m relay team.

Among the men, Basingstoke clubmates Andy Blow and Richard Fox took maximum points from the 400m Hurdles, and the 4x400m relay team also won. Others to finish in the top three in their events were Marimba Odundo-Mendez (200 metres), Mark Berridge (400 metres), Alex Green (High Jump) and Adam Akehurst (Long Jump).

After 64 phone calls, men's team manager Tony Fern had managed to fill most events, and gave vests to some up-and-coming athletes like Alex Green, Jacob Evans, Matt Watson and Alex Wall-Clarke.

Highlighting Andy Blow and Richard Fox's wins in the hurdles, he said "The Basingstoke club have a wonderful attitude, they want to compete. I am grateful to all of their coaches, and Billy Jewers in particular. Also I must thank Team Southampton and Mike Coker for the help I received."

Tony also gave special mentions to Paul Cardy who ran a personal best in the steeplechase in spite of falling head first into the water jump on the last lap, and Marvin Gayle who was feeling a little ill but still performed well. "By the time the relays arrived the team spirit was great - I never had to ask for a team, they volunteered. It was lovely to see the 4x400 team storm home.

"But pride of place goes to Marvin Gayle he was feeling quite bad by this time but still turned out in the sprint relay. I think we have a lot to build on."

8-Counties Under 17 Men and Women (Crawley, 2 August 2009)

The weather helped our Hampshire lads to produce some very good performances, finishing 5th overall. With the sun on their backs both Richard Humby (Pole Vault) 4.30m and Leon Phillips (Long Jump) 6.68m were Hampshire's only winners on the day but the lads produced three Grade I, six Grade II and six Grade III performances giving six second places and five third places.

Given that two athletes failed to arrive leaving six events uncovered, the 110% given by all the athletes who did compete more than made up for the absentees.

I would like to thank each and every athlete, particularly those athletes from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Wight, for their efforts on the day, and their parents for their support. Hampshire has some very talented athletes in this age group and I hope through matches such as these their talent will blossom.

Well done and thank you all!

South of England Under 13 Boys and Girls (Kingsmeadow, 26 July 2009)

A girls' and boys' team representing Hampshire travelled to Kingston to compete in the match hosted by Surrey. A total of 14 counties from across the South of England were competing in this annual fixture, which was being staged for the 17th time this year.

The girls' team of Sophie Merritt, Sophie Kalik, Caitlin Stewart, Stephanie Bottell, Emily Green, Michelle Bigg (Team Southampton), Kierra Barker, Lucy Bomphrey (Basingstoke & Mid Hants), Rosie Upton, Imogen Emmett (Winchester & District), Tilly Edwards (Aldershot, Farnham & District) and Hannah Johnson (Jersey Spartan) finished in a very creditable third place. The girls were particularly strong in the field events where Sophie Merritt led the way winning the Discus, 2nd in the Shot and 2nd in B string Javelin. There was a 2nd for Emily Green in the Javelin, a B string win for Hannah Johnson in the Discus and a 3rd place for Michelle Bigg in the Long Jump. They were well supported on the track with 4th place finishes for Sophie Kalik and Imogen Emmett in the 1500 metres, Lucy Bomphrey in the 100 metres and Kierra Barker in the hurdles.

The boys' team of Charlie Gunson (Team Southampton), Myles Richardson, Mark Flitcroft (Basingstoke & Mid Hants), Calum Upton (Winchester & District), Andrew Collins (Aldershot, Farnham & District), Kieran Phillips, Thomas Newnham (Isle of Wight), Ben Pickup, William Downham (City of Portsmouth), George Hayward (New Forest Junior) and Stanley Livingston (Jersey Spartan) produced a match-winning performance and lifted the winners' trophy for the first time in ten years. Between them the boys picked up 11 personal bests, five first place finishes and 4 other top three places. Myles Richardson won both the 100m and 200m B string races. There was a double first in the 1500m for Calum Upton and Thomas Newnham and a first for Stanley Livingston who in winning the 75m Hurdles broke the meeting record and achieved a new national age group record. Kieran Phillips showed his versatility by finishing 2nd in the Discus, 3rd in the 100m and 4th in the Shot. Other top three finishes came in the B string from George Hayward Javelin and Charlie Gunson Long Jump and to end the day a 2nd place for the relay team of Myles Richardson, Calum Upton, Stanley Livingston, and Kieran Phillips.

 CAU UK Inter-Counties (Bedford, 24/25 May 2009)

Gold medals for Andy Blow in the 400m Hurdles, James Stevenson in the Shot, Karrie Blake in the 800 metres, Verity Snook in the 3000m Walk and Katy Watts in the Javelin, together with a bronze for Isobel Pooley in the High Jump, were the highlights of the weekend. The men's team matched their performance of 2008 while the women improved theirs to 4th.

Reliable results have again been hard to find, with some of our athletes attributed to Herefordshire, Hertfordshire or even Northern Ireland.

South of England Under 15 Boys and Girls (Barnet Copthall, 24 August 2008)

In spite of absenteeism due to holidays, injuries and call-ups to Olympic Torch Ceremonies an almost full team was fielded. Athletes from all quarters were in attendance - Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Wight and Hampshire mainland, illustrating the commitment we got from the boys and their parents/guardians to this competition. The standard of competition was high and the determination of the team saw them placed 6th overall out of 17 teams.

The point scorers were Harvey Dixon (1500m) who timed his race perfectly to out-pace all the opposition with ease on the final lap. Second places were earnt by Gary Jones in the Hammer, Dan Grinham (800m) and Perry Patterson (Javelin), both Gary and Dan gaining personal bests. Nick Percy (Discus) and Ross Hanley (Triple Jump) performed well for 4th placings and Will Yates (80m Hurdles) after picking himself off the floor in his heat to qualify for the the final was pleased to finish the final safely and in one piece for 7th.

8-Counties Under 17 Men and Women (Basildon, 3 August 2008)

The weather conspired to make life difficult for all the athletes with squally showers and high winds. There were a considerable number of first time Hampshire athletes together with seasoned performers, who on the day produced some fine performances. Hampshire winners were Kieran Showler-Davis who ran 10.88 into a strong headwind to take the 100m, Jack Graham won the 'B' 800m, Fred Young the 'B' Discus, whilst first year Richard Humby produced some excellent vaulting to win with 4.00m equalling his personal best despite an horrendous cross wind and the rain.

There were only two 'B' string events that could not be covered and due to injury the 4x400m relay had to be scratched. A number of first choice athletes were on holiday or injured but those who stepped into the breach gave 100% and justified their selection.

This was a much improved result from past years and the athletes are to be congratulated on their performances.

South of England Under 13 Boys and Girls (Kingsmeadow, 27 July 2008)

On one of the hottest days of the year, the girls competed very well in extremely airless conditions which bodes well for the future. We managed to finish in 8th place overall.
